Apprenticeship to King Jesus:

Ancient Catechesis for a Secular Age

Releasing 2026

In a world that constantly shapes our habits, desires, and imagination, what does it mean to be truly formed by Christ?

Apprenticeship to King Jesus invites readers to recover the ancient path of Christian formation practiced by the early Church—where faith was not merely believed, but embodied. Drawing from Scripture and the historic framework of catechesis—Scripture, Creed, Prayer, and the Way of Life—this book offers a thoughtful and practical vision of discipleship for a secular age.

Rather than offering quick fixes or surface-level solutions, it calls believers into something deeper: a life shaped over time through intentional practices, rooted in the reign of Christ. This is an invitation to move beyond information and into transformation—to become not just a believer, but a faithful apprentice of the King.

ABOUT DUSTIN CARPENTER

A pastor, teacher, and lifelong apprentice of King Jesus

For more than fifteen years, Dustin Carpenter has served as a pastor, teacher, and church planter, walking alongside people who long to follow Jesus in a world that often pulls them in a different direction. Along the way, a single question began to shape his life and work:

What does it truly mean to be an apprentice of King Jesus in a secular age?

That question was not born from theory, but from lived experience — from preaching the gospel, discipling others, and witnessing how easily faith can become reduced to information rather than formation.

Over time, Dustin realized that the modern church often asks questions the ancient church had already answered. The early Christians were not simply taught what to believe; they were trained how to live. They were formed through rhythms, practices, and a shared rule of life that shaped their loves, habits, and imagination.

This discovery sent Dustin on a years-long journey through Scripture, the writings of the early Church, and the spiritual practices that have formed believers for centuries. That journey ultimately became the foundation for his book, Apprenticeship to King Jesus: Ancient Catechesis for a Secular Age.

A vision for formation, not just information

Dustin’s work is centered on a simple conviction:
Discipleship is not merely about what we know, but about who we are becoming.

Drawing from the ancient framework of catechesis — Scripture, Creed, Prayer, and the Decalogue — his teaching invites Christians to recover a way of life that forms the whole person: heart, mind, body, and soul.

His desire is not to offer quick fixes or shallow answers, but to help people rediscover a faith that is deep, embodied, and faithful to the way of Jesus.

Living the way of the King

Dustin continues to serve the local church, teach, write, and walk with others as they learn to live under the reign of Christ in everyday life. His hope is to help form communities who are not simply hearers of the Word, but joyful apprentices of the King — learning to live His way, in every sphere of life, for all of life.
